SHIKOTAN

Shikotan Island is the safest island and quite unlike any of the islands of Kuril Ridge. Another name Figurny (‘Figured’ in Russian) was given to the island by navigators because of the amazing traceried pattern of the coastline. This is an island of the most beautiful bays, majestic capes, velvet hills. There are no bears here. Therefore, no one will prevent you from enjoying the mesmerizing beauty of nature, plunging into the sounds of the waves of the Pacific Ocean and naturally — finding Zen.

Shikotan mountain is the highest point of the island, that is why military radars were located there during the Soviet period. Today there are only remains of them. The height of the mountain is 412 meters above sea level. In clear weather, Kunashir and Iturup can be seen from the top of the mountain. This place is often called the wound of Shikotan. In 1994, during a strong earthquake, a fault was formed on the mountain in a matter of seconds, it was as if it burst and exploded. As a result, a fissure with jagged edges and a narrow entrance appeared at the foot. At the bottom of the fissure, pillars of flagstone formed a fantastic landscape that draws the eyes of many travelers.

Cape Edge of the World is tall, wave-shaped and long like an unrolled scarf. A little walk — and the Pacific Ocean opens up in front of you. This is the most remote point from the capital of Russia, the distance to Moscow in a straight line is just over 7,100 km. That’s it, here Russia comes to an end. Beyond are 8,000 km of water, and further — only America. Underfoot, at the bottom of a sheer 50-meter chasm, heavy waves beat against the rocks. The strong wind makes its presence felt, almost blowing you off your seat, and energizing the place.

Bukhta Bezymyannaya (‘Unnamed Bay’ in Russian) — since the movie was filmed in 1972, it has been called Robinson’s Bay more and more often, but it is unlikely that this name sticks to the harbor, because name Bezymyannaya is already there. According to many eyewitnesses, this bay is the most beautiful place made by nature on the island.

Dimitrov Bay

Dimitrov Bay and the peninsula of the same name were named after Georgi Dimitrov, an outstanding leader of the Bulgarian labor movement and founder of the Bulgarian People's Republic.

In the old days the area around the Dimitrov Bay was a home for Japanese fishermen. Now this place is entirely a wildlife attraction. High rocky shores, ocean views, smell of meadow grasses — this bay is ideal for photo walks and wildlife solitude.
