Golovninsky Cliff spreads out from Mys (Cape) Puzanov to the mouth of Belozerka River. This unique relief is a real open-air geological museum. The main stages of the Golovnin volcano’s activity and climatic events over the past two million years are depicted here. The structure of the cliff is quite complicated: ashes from ancient eruptions alternate with strata of marine sediments and include different-aged peat bogs.In addition to the cliffs, which are the background for unforgettable photos, the local waterfalls are the objects of special tourists’ attention. They come down from the height of the cliff and fall directly into the sea.

The volcano is named after the brave Russian traveler Vasily Golovnin, who explored the Kurils in the early 19th century and made two round-the-world voyages. A specific feature of Golovnin is the absence of a clearly defined cone: thousand years ago, there was a gigantic explosion comparable to the eruption of Tambora or Krakatoa.
There are two lakes located in the caldera, one of them is named Goryachee (‘Hot’ in Russian), and the other one, which is located directly in one of the craters, Kipyashchee Lake (‘Boiling Lake’ in Russian). The lakes contain a large amount of sulfur and sulfide compounds, and sulfide-sulfur foam is floating in Kipyashchee Lake.

Cape Stolbchaty is one of the special features of Kunashir Island and the entire Sakhalin Oblast. The cape was formed as a result of the eruption of Mendeleyev volcano. The entire rock consists of hexagonal and pentagonal regular columns that strike imagination with their shape. In some places the height of the columns reaches 50 meters.

Cape Stolbchaty is included in the UNESCO register as a world heritage site.
